JBX PaperPak, Award Nominated Paper Straws Manufacturer | Big Sustainability Expo 2022

Mission - Green Background Logos

This year, JBX PaperPak will be attending The Big Sustainability Expo 2022 on 22nd September in St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton.

We are incredibly excited to announce that the event organisers have shortlisted us as a finalist for an award! The award we are nominated for is in the ‘Bold Move’ category:

“Sometimes it takes a bold move from one company to push the boundaries on sustainability. This award will recognise organisations that can point to one truly risky, ground breaking step they have taken to advance sustainability which could pave the way for other businesses.”

Paper Straws

We are incredibly proud to make the shortlist of finalists for the ‘Bold Move’ award. We started JBX PaperPak at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic; there could not have been a worse time to start a paper straw company, as nearly every business that uses straws was forced to close due to lockdown restrictions.

However, we are committed to breaking the dependence we have as a society on single-use plastics, so we refused to give up. We kept all of our staff employed and kept producing paper straws throughout the lockdowns; we believed as soon as the world started to open up, there would be an opportunity to make huge leaps forward in sustainability.

Given that there were global supply chain issues and shipping container shortages, just as we started to emerge from COVID-19 restrictions, I’d say we were right. Businesses that require straws were struggling to get them, but fortunately JBX PaperPak was on hand. We had tens of millions of straws in storage that had been produced throughout the pandemic, in which time we had also expanded our product range.

Businesses were able to avoid resorting to less environmentally friendly straws as we were there to supply them with our many sizes and colours of ISO certified, 100% recyclable, compostable and biodegradable products. Deciding to tough out the pandemic was a big risk for us, but it was a risk that paid off; we no longer make straws to sit in storage, we’re now selling so many that we’re more or less making to order.

Biodegradable Paper Straws

Ending the reliance society has on single-use plastics is at the very core of JBX PaperPak’s values. Our mission is to protect the environment from the scourge of plastic pollution by offering high-quality sustainable alternatives. Plastic straws are one of the worst offending contributors to plastic pollution, with over 9 billion polluting coastlines around the world and tens of billions more in the ocean.

Our biodegradable paper straws pose none of the threats to wildlife and cause none of the damage to the environment that plastic straws do. A plastic straw can take centuries to break down, whereas our paper straws will completely decompose in just a matter of weeks

We have worked closely with many of our clients to help them future proof their businesses. Corporate responsibility for the impact industry has on the climate and the environment is crucial if we hope to be successful in fighting climate change.

We love that events such as The Big Sustainability Expo are taking place to bring leaders in sustainable business together and showcase innovation in corporate sustainability. We would like to thank the event organisers again for shortlisting us for the Bold Move award, we are very grateful! For all those attending the event, you can find us in the Kingsland Suite at stand No. 92 – we hope to see you all there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our paper straws are made by stacking 3 plies of high-quality food grade kraft paper and putting them through a core-winding machine that applies an adhesive and rolls the straws into shape. They are then cut to size, coated in lacquer to ensure quality and are then ready to be sold.
